Spectacle in the Society of Light.

Many of the modern impressions on light are rooted within the early conceptions of the study of the luminous heavenly bodies and the archaic fire. Subconsciously and unconsciously due to psychological precedent, humanity has been trained to regard light, as a symbol of divinity and holiness whereas darkness came to be associated with evil.
People, on the other hand have always been fascinated with the ability to control light. Though no one can hardly doubt electric light's contribution to social life, closer examination will convey undetected details where the medium of electric light was used as an agent of change in the contemporary era. This powerful agent fettered by man's ambition and the unyielding shackles of a sordid commercialism, would create new cultural spaces and environments, new architectural effects and new needs changing the attitude of mind and the material condition of the people. Additively when electric light would escape the “testing grounds” of the World Fairs, it entered all aspects of public life creating a -hyperreality- within the urban landscape. Spectacular electric displays, illuminated monuments and buildings, festivities of national rejoicing; the march of electric artificial light had begun. The new world was not the real world, but a view of the world conditioned to be seen. The city, was planned, built and controlled by specialists: architects, planning comities, developers and illuminating engineers. “Electric light is pure information”, it simply slips attention as a communication medium, because it lacks content (Mc Luhan). Ultimately this medium would utterly effect and change all aspects of everyday life.
